website! Please read on to learn more about Katahdin sheep and how to purchase them from

Katahdin Sheep are hardy, adaptable,
low maintenance sheep that produce superior lambs and lean savory tasting meat They were
developed in the late 1950's by Michael Piel of Maine.
Piel wanted to up the production of
meat and felt that elimination of wool should be a major factor for selection. He began
doing this by combining the hardy African Hair Sheep he had imported from the
St. Croix, Virgin Islands, to wooled breeds. He began to experiment with crosses between
the hair sheep and various British breeds and the Virgin Island breed. After almost 20
years of crossing the hybrids, in the early and mid 1970's Piel finally felt he had got
close to a "meat sheep that did not require shearing" he called them Katahdins,
named after Mt.Katahdin in Maine.
Studies of internal parasite
tolerance in Arkansas indicate that Katahdin sheep possess a significantly higher degree
of parasite resistance than wooled sheep, and heat tolerance trials demonstrated a similar
relationship. Other traits being studied at research institutions include out-of-season
breeding, prolificacy and fertility factors, carcass quality and meat flavor, and growth
performance.
